WEST NUSA TENGGARA

 West Nusa Tenggara which is made up of the island of Lombok and Sumbawa was once thought to be dull and uninteresting difficult to get to and its peoples unfriendly .Lombok was used for short breaks away from Bali while Sumbawa was only valued for the cheap land route it offered to komodo and beyond. 

             Times have changed and the door has opened. Many more are discovering two enchanting island that still retain the mystique of the east, island still glowing with an aura of the past.

             The beauty of the landscape is relatively unspoilt -ideal countryside for trekking and those with an adventurous spirit. Lombok is Mt Rinjani,  an awe inspiring volcano which soars to a height of 3.726metres ,while Sumbawa's Mt Tambora is credited with the most destructive eruption in recorded history. It once held the title of being the highest mountain in south East Asia until reducing its height to its present more lowly 2.850 meters. 

             Lombok in Sumbawa have coastlines lined with pristine beaches and fabulous waters for windsurfing, surfing, game-fishing and underwater activities. To the east Sumbawa ,some 350 kilometers long and at the most 50 kilometers fro0m north to south has a south coast of extinct volcanic peaks that plunge straight into the Indian Ocean. 

             The island have thankfully not yet leapt into our present day reality of traffic jams and smog. Traditional carts pulled by small ponies still seem to be the preferred method of transport. Even in streams beside the main street of Mataram, the provincial capital, you can drivers washing their steeds in sparking mountain streams.     

             This not to say that holiday in Lombok or Sumbawa means that you have to rough it. Lombok's accommodation list includes star -studded home grown properties and international chains such as Sheraton, Holiday inn, Novotel and Oberoi. Sumbawa can even boast and Aman resort on one of its secluded island. 

             To day its possible to fly to both island. At least 10 flights a day make the trip from Bali to Lombok . There are daily flights from Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Surabaya by Garuda ,while silk Air files direct from Singapore.
